What Is AI Automation, Really?
AI Automation is the biggest buzzword in business today—but most people couldn’t explain what it actually means.
Does it mean you just plug an OpenAI or Anthropic API into your business, and—bam!—your entire operation is magically automated, driving unfathomable ROI?
Not quite.
Unless you're a massive tech company with proprietary infrastructure, AI automation doesn’t work like that. At least, not yet.
A more accurate term for most businesses is AI-assisted automation.
First, What Is Automation?
Automation is simply a set of computer instructions sequenced to run on a schedule or trigger. When applied to data systems, it means automating how information moves and transforms—from raw source to final destination (like a dashboard or report).
You define the steps. The system runs them. That’s automation.
So Where Does AI Fit In?
Here’s the reality: most automation still runs the same way it always has—through a sequence of human-defined steps. The only thing that’s really changed is the rise of no-code tools, which make it easier to build those sequences.
But those tools aren’t AI. They’re just better UI for setting up rules and logic.
AI comes in when one of those steps is “handed off” to an AI model.
For example:
You send data into an AI model through an API (like OpenAI or Claude)
You pass it a written prompt (e.g., “Summarize this sales report”)
The AI completes the task
The automation picks up the result and continues the sequence
That’s AI-assisted automation—and it’s where most businesses sit today.
The Hype vs. The Reality
New developments like MCP are pushing the envelope. In 6–12 months, it’s possible AI will be able to set up and run full automation sequences without human help.
But today?
The best you can get is human-sequenced automation enhanced by AI tasks.
And that’s an important distinction.
A lot of startups claim to “AI automate your business.” Sounds cool. But what they’re usually doing is:
Connecting modern no-code tools
Moving your data from Point A to Point B
Plugging in AI for one or two steps
That’s not magic. That’s smart sequencing—with a little AI boost.
